The multi-award winning sound and light show The Enchanted Forest opens this week and, thanks to Fife outdoor clothing company Keela International, a party of enthusiasts from the region will be getting the first opportunity to set foot in the forest as part of the national Britain on Foot campaign.

The Britain on Foot campaign is specifically aimed at encouraging more people to explore the great outdoors through walking, cycling, or climbing, and to create a healthier nation.

Keela International have been producing garments designed for the outdoor sector for the last 30 years and, as partner to the national campaign, identified The Enchanted Forest as a potential event that would both achieve the aim of getting people into the great outdoors, as well as creating an enjoyable night out for people.

Alan Knox, retail manager with Keela International commented:

“The outdoors can sometimes be a little bit daunting, but The Enchanted Forest is a unique event that gets people interacting with the outdoors without any of the preconceptions they might have about how they have to dress, or what they need to take with them. It seemed like the perfect match to encourage people to get outdoors and we’re delighted that they have been able to assist us in making this happen.”

The group will attend an exclusive preview night on Wednesday October 2nd, prior to the show opening to the general public on Friday 4th October, and will be among a small number of competition winners to see this year’s show before anyone else. Over 32,000 visitors are expected to attend during the show’s 23 night run throughout October, many of them travelling a significant distance to attend.

The annual Perthshire Big Tree Country event celebrated its 10th anniversary last year and was recently named Best Cultural Event at the VisitScotland Thistle Awards ceremony held earlier this month, adding to a raft of awards won over the last few years.

The 2013 show, absorb, has been designed by Scottish lighting designers Kate Bonney and Simon Hayes and with music by RJ McConnell, which includes a specially commissioned orchestral piece in collaboration with composer Jon Beales.

Derek Allan, creative director of The Enchanted Forest commented,

“We are very happy to support the Britain on Foot campaign in this way – the event is all about encouraging people to enjoy the beauty of the Autumnal forest at a time of day that people wouldn’t normally be in forests, and at a time of year where people are more likely to stay indoors. We’re grateful to Keela International for organising this trip and look forward to welcoming their visitors to The Enchanted Forest.”

The Enchanted Forest will take place from Friday 4th – Sunday 27th October 2011 at Faskally Wood near Pitlochry.

The Enchanted Forest, Scotland’s premier sound and light show, will be spreading its roots this Autumn thanks to funding from the Year of Natural Scotland which is intended to help extend the event’s reach to the Northern English market.

The funding will help boost the event’s annual marketing campaign, allowing it to venture into the Newcastle and North East Region for the first time, in a bid to attract even more visitors to see the Autumn spectacle which takes place in October every year.

The Perthshire event has become a mainstay of Scotland’s tourism calendar and marketing manager, Tricia Fox, had identified the North East Region of England as a market for expansion:

“The event has always attracted visitors from the North East of England so it was a clear area for us to identify as having potential for growth. We’re expecting over 32,000 visitors to attend the event this year and we very much welcome being able to extend our message to a brand new audience. If you think about it, in just 3 short hours you can travel by train from the centre of Newcastle to the heart of an Enchanted Forest in Scotland – that’s got to be worth spreading the word about!”

The Enchanted Forest is organised by Highland Perthshire Community Interest Company under the Perthshire Big Tree Country brand. Founded in 2002 with just 3000 visitors attending in its first year, the event now attracts more than ten times that number of visitors with almost 31,000 visiting the show last year.

The 2013 show, absorb, has been designed by Scottish lighting designers Kate Bonney and Simon Hayes and with music by RJ McConnell, which includes a specially commissioned orchestral piece in collaboration with composer Jon Beales.

Later this month the event will also compete for the titles of Scotland’s Best Cultural Event and Best Large Event and organisers are hoping for a reprise of their success in 2011 when they took home a commendation for Best Large Event, the trophy for Best Cultural Event and beat off stiff competition from all the other category winners to take the title of Event Management Grand Prix, firmly cementing the show as one of Scotland’s top events.

Derek Allan, Producer of The Enchanted Forest said:

“We’re delighted to receive funding from Year of Natural Scotland to raise awareness of the event in the North East of England. Highland Perthshire Community Interest Company has always pushed the boundaries with this event and it’s rewarding to be able to continue to extend awareness of the stunning Highland Perthshire scenery and this very special event.”

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer for EventScotland said:
“We are delighted to support The Enchanted Forest as part of the Year of Natural Scotland 2013. Visual artists continue to be inspired by our country’s unique natural heritage and The Enchanted Forest is set to be a stunning celebration of art in nature that shows Scotland is the perfect stage for events”

Following high anticipation from prospective participants, entries opened today (29th January) for the sister event to the highly successful Etape Caledonia, the new Marie Curie Cancer Care Etape Mercia which will take place on 18th August 2013 in Cheshire.

Organisers IMG also revealed the full beautiful and inspiring entry level route, which winds through the West Cheshire countryside taking in highlights such as Beeston Castle, Delamere Forest and Little Switzerland.

Two weeks ago, Dame Sarah Storey launched the new closed road sportive and since then excited riders have been able to register their interest in the new 69 mile event. The event website www.etapemercia.co.uk has seen high levels of traffic so places are expected to be snapped up quickly. Pitlochry based Etape Caledonia cold out in just 72 hours when it went on sale in 2012.

Participants can now enter the event at www.etapemercia.co.uk. In addition to general entries, 400 free charity pledge places will be available to those willing to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. With strong links to charity partners, the Etape Series has also been instrumental in encouraging participants to raise well in excess of £1.5million over its seven year history for its title charity partners.

The Etape Mercia route starts and finishes with a lap of the famous Oulton Park racing circuit, which is home to the British Superbikes Series. The route loops around the stunning Beeston Castle – a Medieval Castle on a rocky outcrop from the time of the English Civil War- before winding north through the countryside. From this point, riders then hit their first hill before passing through the amazing Delamere Forest giving some incredible views on the way. The route then winds its way back to Oulton Park for a final victory lap before finishing on the circuit’s finish line and your well deserved medal.

Full details of the route can be found here: http://etapemercia.co.uk/coursemaps.html

Marie Curie Cancer Care Etape Series ambassador Dame Sarah Storey said: “I’m so excited to see the interest building for this fantastic cycling event in my local area. I was up on the route recently and it really is spectacular.

“It is a mass participation event, it’s non-competitive, and people will have their own little personal goals that they will want to achieve and that’s perfect and it is what sport is about. It is about doing the best you can and enjoying yourself in the process.”

The Marie Curie Cancer Care Etape Mercia has set the standard for sportives in the UK. All of the events, which include Etape Caledonia and Etape Pennines, enjoy closed roads, excellent support and awe inspiring routes. The organisers are challenging riders to try and claim a hat trick by riding all three events in the series, Etape Mercia for entry level, Etape Caledonia for seasoned riders and the toughest sportive in the UK, Etape Pennines.

Marie Curie Cancer Care, the event’s charity partner, is encouraging all participants to raise funds for the charity. Marie Curie provides free hands-on nursing care to people with a terminal illness, enabling them to spend their final weeks, days or hours at home, in familiar surroundings with the people and things they love close by.

An award winning Perthshire tourist attraction that claims visitors will experience a light show that is, quite simply, out of this world has been assisting an official investigation into recent sightings of a UFO near Pitlochry.
The Enchanted Forest has been approached by the British UFO Research Association to establish whether or not there is any link between the Clunie Wood sighting on November 6th and the annual event which takes place at nearby Faskally Wood every year.
The event has often turned out to be the source of many such sightings in the past, with drivers up and down the A9 stretch of road regularly contacting Tayside Police, claiming to see strange moving lights and unidentifiable illuminations in the sky.
Tricia Fox, marketing manager for the event, commented:
“We were contacted on Monday morning by Matt Lyons, chairman of BUFORA, to establish whether or not there was any direct link between the most recent sighting and the event. We were able to confirm to him that, on this occasion, The Enchanted Forest was not the source of the lit object seen in the sky on the morning on the 6th November.”
Every year, we receive reports of a number of UFO sightings during the event and we’re happy to put the record straight that the strange apparitions have, indeed, been caused by a spectacular sound and light show and not some other-world visitors.”
The Enchanted Forest attracted over 30,000 visitors to the Highland Perthshire area this year 7% of whom claim not to be from Scotland. Could inter-galactic visitors be an untapped market for this major tourist event?

The Enchanted Forest, a Perthshire Big Tree Country event, has been shortlisted as a finalist for the 2012 Year of Creative Scotland Event at this year’s Creative Scotland Awards which will be held in Glasgow on Thursday 13th December.

The shortlist, due to be released by the awards organisers next week, is currently shrouded in an air of creative mystery but is expected to be a glittering array of all that is best in Scotland’s creative sector covering not just events, but film, literature, theatre, dance, music and education.

The 2012 show “FLOW” was designed by a creative team led by Derek Allan which includes Scottish designers Simon Wilkinson (lighting) and RJ McConnell (sound), as well as Dundee based visual artists Dalziel + Scullion.

Derek Allan, creative director of The Enchanted Forest commented:

“This year’s show was a truly collaborative approach involving a creative team that spanned lighting design, musical composition, and the visual arts and as a team we are very grateful to Creative Scotland for their support in helping us to continue to develop the artistic integrity of the event which has been recognised in this award nomination.”

The Enchanted Forest is no stranger to awards success, topping the charts at the Scottish Event Awards in 2011 with the Event Management Grand Prix not to mention the accolades for Best Cultural Event, Perthshire’s Best Event and clocking up numerous other awards along the way.

In 2012, in its 10th Anniversary Year, this Big Tree Country event smashed through the 30,000 visitors barrier for the first time since the event began, contributing an estimated £1.5million to the local Highland Perthshire economy over its 24 night run.

This latest news comes just 4 days before the event goes head to head with some of Scotland’s biggest tourism operators at this year’s Thistle Awards for the coveted title of VisitBritain Marketing Campaign of the Year.

A social enterprise, The Highland Perthshire Area Community Interest Company, has successfully run the multi-award winning show since 2010, growing the event substantially in just 3 years by almost 50% taking the event from around 20,000 visitors in 2010 to over 30,000 visitors in 2012.

Our box office has worked around the clock to ensure everyone gets their tickets. This is fantastic news for the local area – with a 50% increase in visitors coming to the show over the last three years, over half of which stay in the area overnight, it represents a significant boost to the income of businesses in the area, from shops to restaurants to hotels at a time when many businesses across the UK are tightening their belts.”

Together they have created a dazzling and engaging show which not only celebrates 10 Years of The Enchanted Forest but is, in itself, a celebration of the stunning woodland setting in which the event is set. Visitors have taken to the social networking site Facebook to express their appreciation for the show:

“What an amazing night my daughter and I had there tonight, just so brilliant and everyone so nice and helpful thanks to all who make it possible.” Mhairie Dinsdale

“My son has just got back from seeing the Forest tonight. He has autism and the whole light experience has stimulated him very much. Best day ever he said.” Julie Naylor

The show even prompted the country’s top tourism chief Mike Cantlay, Chairman of VisitScotland, to write to show organisers personally, expressing:

“It is one of the most exciting and inspirational creative exhibitions I have seen throughout this Year of Creative Scotland”

Tricia Fox, marketing manager for The Enchanted Forest said “We are extremely pleased with the performance of this year’s show – there’s a lot of hard work and planning goes into a show of this scale and it’s rewarding that demand continues to increase year on year. There are some tickets left for shows this week however folks had better be quick if they are still thinking about coming to the event this year – they are selling out quickly!”

VisitScotland chairman, Mike Cantlay, has stated today that The Enchanted Forest, a Perthshire Big Tree Country event and Scotland’s premier sound and light show, is a must see event for visitors to Scotland this Autumn, embodying the essence of the country’s national tourism message: Surprise Yourself. Visit Scotland.

Visiting the event on its opening night with his family, Mike Cantlay saw the multi-coloured event unfold in all its glory. He commented:

“The Enchanted Forest is a spectacular and incredibly popular event, which attracts tens of thousands of people to visit Perthshire each year, and I am confident it will be a box office ticket smash again this year.

My family and I had a wonderful time at the Enchanted Forest and it proves you don’t have to travel very far to experience Scotland’s vibrant culture, which is so evident in every corner of this country.”

The Enchanted Forest now attracts visitors from all over the UK and, indeed, the world and the positive impact on the local area is estimated to be well in excess of £1.5 million economic benefit every year.

With box office numbers soaring, the impact on the local economy is expected to increase and closer working relationships with key businesses this year are set to enhance the offering for visitors to the area this Autumn.

A number of local tourism businesses are working collaboratively to promote the event, with local accommodation providers offering deals that include tickets to the event, and other visitor attractions offering discount entry for Enchanted Forest ticket holders.

Blair Castle on Atholl Estates is one of the businesses that is promoting discounted entry during the show. Mike Dukes, Head of Visitor Services at Atholl Estates explained why:

“The Enchanted Forest is a firm favourite amongst families and creates a real buzz across the region as people flock from across the country to come and see the spectacular light displays. The fact that the exhibitions are refreshed each year also means that we see a flurry of new visitors through our doors when the event is on. It also provides a very welcome boost to businesses across the surrounding area and we’re delighted to extend a warm Highland Perthshire welcome to The Enchanted Forest’s customers.”

Mike Cantlay, chairman of VisitScotland added:

“The success of The Enchanted Forest has a knock-on positive effect on the local economy and I would encourage businesses, accommodation providers and the tourism sector to seize the opportunity this provides to showcase to visitors all that this fabulous area has to offer.

In this, The Year of Creative Scotland, we have the chance to spotlight, celebrate and promote Scotland’s cultural and creative strengths, so let’s embrace this and show what a warm welcome Scotland can offer each and every visitor!”

Organisers are encouraging members of the public to buy their tickets in advance to avoid disappointment with recent box office reports suggesting the event is on target to power past all previous box office records.
Following a successful opening weekend demand for tickets has surged indicating that the 2012 event is set to sell out.

Derek Allan, creative director of The Enchanted Forest 2012, commented:

“Last year many people travelled significant distances to attend the event, all we’re asking is that they plan ahead and book their tickets in advance. Tickets sell so quickly and many shows are already sold out with hardly any tickets left for the most popular Saturday nights – a little bit of advance planning can avoid disappointment on the night.”
